From January 1, , Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, Kristineberg Marine Research Station and the research vessel Skagerak were combined to form a new infrastructure organisation within the University of Gothenburg, The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences.
Tjarno Marine Biological Laboratory (TMBL) is a field station for the study of marine biology, and belongs to the universities of Goteborg and Stockholm. It is located on the Swedish west coast, 12 km south of Stromstad on the east side of the Koster fjord in the county of Vastra Gotaland (58 degrees 52'N, 11 degrees 10'E). It is about km north of Goteborg and km south of Oslo. The laboratory was founded in on a relatively simple scale and has then seen a great expansion, particularly since TMBL is now a scientific centre with a high international standard. Besides conducting basic education and research in marine biology, TMBL provide specialised advice, information and expertise within the region, for industry, schools, decision makers and the public.
