Nearly two years after breaking ground in Dormagen, Kemira will celebrate the grand opening of its biggest water treatment chemicals manufacturing plant. On October 9th, Kemira will celebrate together with companies involved in the construction, business partners and customers from Germany, France and Benelux, offering a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse of this modern and well-integrated chemical production process.
“Kemira is the market leader in chemical treatment of raw and waste water in the developed markets. Our Dormagen plant will help us sustain this leadership position in Europe. This plant is also an example of our continuous efforts in improving the resource efficiency of our production plants and operations. It will operate on % recycled hydrochloric acid, supplied by the TDI-plant of Bayer MaterialScience, from which we manufacture specific water chemicals used successfully in municipal and industrial water treatment applications. This will secure Kemira’s long-term, cost-efficient access to this key raw material used in coagulant manufacturing.” says Jari Rosendal, Kemira’s President and CEO.

In August Kemira announced changes to its operating model and leadership team to better meet its profitable growth ambitions. The design phase of the new operating model and organizational structure started in August and is now completed. The number of Kemira employees will remain approximately the same even if many roles and responsibilities will change.
Kemira will move to three externally reported business units: Water Solutions, Packaging & Hygiene Solutions and Fiber Essentials. The centralized Operations unit will be established and it includes Kemira’s manufacturing network, Sourcing and Supply Chain Management to further strengthen Kemira’s operational backbone, enabling stronger cooperation and optimizing efficiency.
The recruitment process of the Chief Operations Officer is ongoing. The position is new and will be part of Kemira’s Group Leadership Team. Kemira’s President & CEO Antti Salminen will act as interim Chief Operations Officer from the beginning of January until the Chief Operations Officer starts in the role.

Kemira adjusts portfolio
Kemira has announced plans to invest a “low double-digit millions of euros” sum to build a reactivation plant for activated carbon at its Helsingborg site in Sweden. Due to be operational in 2H , this will supply the Nordic drinking vatten and wastewater markets and is part of a long-term strategy to double the vatten treatment business. It follows the acquisition of Norit’s UK reactivation business, Purton Carbons.
Shortly before this, Kemira announced plans to consolidate some massa and paper chemical production in North America, resulting in the closure of a site in Vancouver, which produces process and functional chemicals. Production will move in 1H to Washougal, Washington, where Kemira already makes these chemicals. The move is expected to streamline operational efficiency in North American operations in response to changing market conditions. The company added that the move is not related to the planned changes to its new operating model and organisational structure announced during Q3
